Wikimedia Czech Republic Strategic plan for the years 2025-27

This document is the Strategic Plan of Wikimedia Czech Republic for the three-year period 2025 – 2027. It was created between November 2023 and May 2024 in an open facilitated process involving members and employees of the association, as well as various members of the Czech community.

AREA

1. Education

VISION STRATEGIC STEPS
We are a leading educator in the field of wiki skills and knowledge, aiming to build the Czech wiki community and empower its members through further education. By focusing on the first positive experience with Wikipedia for students and preparing educators, we maintain a general awareness of Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects in society. We target the education of seniors, librarians, experts, and other groups in order to support the diversity of the Czech community and the growth of content on Czech Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

1.1. Seniors

  1. We offer a long-term comprehensive senior program — from basic to advanced courses, follow-up wiki clubs, and other activities (WikiSchool, wiki advisory, senior WikiTown, Alumni Club, competitions, lectures) — allowing seniors to develop and become “regular” community members.
  2. We offer senior activities across the country, aiming to expand them nationwide.
  3. The backbone of our senior activities is our library network, which we maintain and develop.

1.2. Schools and Education

  1. We focus on relevant paths for us (topics of challenges and content gaps) to provide students with their first positive experience with Wikipedia.
  2. We are a key partner in modern approaches to education for our partners and students (working with sources, verifying information, critical thinking, media literacy, and building digital competencies, AI, and Futures literacy). Due to this, we offer products to schools and partners.
  3. We support students writing Wikipedia and their educators so that their content is relevant for Wikipedia — we are continuously receiving community feedback and reflecting it back.
  4. We lead students to create and understand the phenomenon of open educational resources (OER).

1.3. Open Educational Program

  1. We educate the community: We support ongoing educational activities for the community — wiki clubs, wiki meetups, wiki advisory; involving active volunteers in their implementation.
  2. We work with libraries: We are partners in the modern role of libraries in society — intersecting with our goals towards seniors or students.
  3. We are building a teaching and organizational team to be prepared to implement our activities. We support capacity building within the community and create its content and form together with the active community.
  4. We are developing a community of young Wikimedians.
  5. We share our know-how internationally and bring trends back to the Czech Republic.
AREA

2. Community

VISION STRATEGIC STEPS
We develop the Czech community and support, motivate, and connect its members according to their needs.

We offer various paths to improve the quality of Wikimedia projects and their use.

We organically increase the number of active members of the association.

2.1. Editors

  1. We motivate, appreciate, and maintain editors in long-term editing activities.
  2. We identify and focus on selected topics that increase the diversity of topics and editors, align with the needs of Czech and international partners. And at the same time are attractive to the general public, and are missing on Wikipedia.
  3. Our thematic challenges combine the activities of individual programs to increase their reach and impact, supporting connections between experienced community members and newcomers. We uphold the principle of low-threshold activities.

2.2 Photographers

  1. We support activities that aim at both quality and higher use of multimedia on Wikipedia.
  2. We support simple and up-to-date ways for photographers to participate in Wikimedia Commons.
  3. We create conditions for Czech photographers to participate in international Wikimedia photo competitions.

2.3.Community Activities

  1. We support the initiative of active community members — especially for local and community activities and create resources for them.
  2. We identify and respond to current community needs and suggestions.
AREA

3. Partnerships

VISION STRATEGIC STEPS
We connect strategic partners from public institutions and organizations to share information publicly and seek the best use of their content and know-how from a long-term and global perspective. We co-create maximally free conditions in the Czech environment for this purpose.

3.1. GLAM

  1. Strategic partnerships (i.e., partnerships with institutions with long-term strategic potential) form the backbone of all our activities. We prefer joint activities focusing on WMCZ's key themes and missing content within Wikimedia projects.
  2. Wiki residency is the pinnacle of our partnerships; we work long-term with wiki residents.
  3. We create an environment for partners aiming for the greatest impact on Wikimedia projects.

3.2. Wikidata/Tech

  1. We support the Wikidata/Tech community in its activities and seek ways to expand it.
  2. Activities with partners emphasize the long-term development of the Wikidata project and the principles of open data.

3.3. Advocacy

  1. We support the principles of open culture across society.
  2. We respond to current threats (or challenges) in the area of enacted legislation.
  3. We create collaborations aimed at global goals.
AREA

4. Organizational Culture

VISION STRATEGIC STEPS
We are an organization whose processes support the development of a safe environment for collaboration and a healthy and stimulating internal culture.

We invest in members and employees, develop their potential, and create ways to actively utilize it.

We deepen the quality of internal processes evenly to support sustainable operations — both financially and procedurally.

We evaluate the impact of our activities long-term and use this in our planning.

4.1. Effective Processes and Safe Environment in the Organization

  1. We create processes that support the principles of good collaboration and create a safe environment for everyone's participation.
  2. We aim for efficient association processes with democratic principles and minimal formalism. In this spirit, we streamline communication with organization members.
  3. We define association values that reflect the values of the Wikimedia movement.

4.2. Collaboration and Internal Culture Rules

  1. We actively create an environment where we enjoy collaborating long-term. It is friendly for newcomers and stimulating for experienced community members.
  2. We continuously address all groups in our community in ways that are natural for them and create space where every voice can be heard.
  3. We seek the best ways to involve our community groups in deciding on the direction of community activities.
  4. We seek feedback from participants in our activities and our partners on the collaboration.
  5. We aim for a diverse and engaged membership base. We create conditions for greater permeability of active members through organization activities.

4.3. Development

  1. We focus on the long-term sustainable development of funding sources, focusing on supporting individual donations.
  2. As an organization, we create an environment supporting the development of everyone and offer support for individual learning and development of team members to ensure team stability.
  3. We use a stable form of external communication (PR), which enhances and reflects our activities to maximize outputs and their impact.
  4. We continuously monitor, record, and publish the impact of our activities, focusing on change, comprehensibility, and relevance of outputs. We consider the impact when planning our activities.
AREA

5. International Engagement

VISION STRATEGIC STEPS
We are an active part of the international community.

We responsibly fulfill our role in the CEE region and the global Wikimedia movement, as well as in other regional and thematic international Wikimedia organizations in which we participate or share.

We support the international engagement of association members and the community.

5.1. Our Role and Implementation of Movement Goals

  1. We are aware of our strong role in the CEE region and act from this role in the interest of developing other communities in the region.
  2. We are active participants in implementing international goals, considering the best interest of the Czech community and the international movement.

5.2. Sharing Know-How and Participation

  1. We share our good practices in a form that is understandable to the international community and at a frequency that corresponds to the extent of our activities and follows our strategic goals.
  2. We support the involvement of Czech community members in the international Wikimedia movement and inform them about international developments and the position of WMCZ.

5.3. Collaboration

  1. We are active members of the Wikimedia CEE Hub and support the development of this international organization and others we join.
  2. We seek international collaborations that support the development of our goals.
